Web apps and iPhone optimised porn sites are nothing new, not that we’ve been looking, you understand. However, the Sex App Shop, which has just launched internationally, takes things to a new level. Save the website as a homescreen icon on your iPhone, and when you launch it, the Safari layer with a URL and Google Search bar is removed, so it looks just like a native app.
The Sex App Shop then stores the “apps” (galleries and videos) you pay for locally as cached web content, so you can ogle them even offline, which is good news for pervy iPod touch owners.
As iPhone web apps go, it’s hugely innovative. That it contains mucky content is a byproduct. However, it paves the way for other types of independent app stores taking advantage of HTML5 web standards, which let the iPhone store offline content without going through the official iPhone app store, skirting Apple’s approval process.
Did we mention that the iPhone Sex App Shop is out now? Porn has a long history of making or breaking new technology. From Betamax to HD-DVD, many technologies have failed because of a lack of support from the adult entertainment industry. Now it seems HTML 5, and by association the iPhone has been given the grubby-thumbed vote of confidence.
